Amara's collection began with a single record inherited from her grandfather in Accra — a highlife pressing so worn it barely played. Restoring the music it held became a mission, and then a way of life.

Today she hunts for West African pressings that the official histories overlooked: regional labels, tiny runs, records that were never reissued and never will be unless someone like her keeps a copy alive.

"Every record I save is a piece of a story that was nearly lost," she says. She plays them constantly, and loudly, exactly as they were meant to be heard.
